Tips for a Square-Shaped Face

At Salon 7000 recently, I have had many clients’ that ask for hair suggestions to compliment a square-shaped face. The answer honestly depends on the person, and their lifestyle, but there are choices out there for everyone. You have a squared shaped face if you have a strong angular jawline, and broad forehead. Square facial features are known to photograph extremely well, so smile for your close-ups ladies! Celebrities with this facial shape are Salma Hayek, Olivia Wilde, Gwyneth Paltrow and Keira Knightley. The usual hair rules for this facial shape are:
  • Avoid harsh or dramatic lines.
  • Let it grow, let it grow, let it grow! Long hair looks great on square facial features.
  • Avoid blunt ends, and one length hair cuts that are above the chin. The idea is to create softness with playful layers in the interior of the cut, and a few pieces to frame the face and give some roundness to the jawline.
  • If you absolutely must wear a bob…keep it below the chin line to elongate your face, but you will still want to keep some layers.
  • I know a lot of women have naturally curly hair, and this facial shape. Embrace those curls because they are the most complimenting to a square face.
  • Side bangs can help create separation and draw the eye away from the sharper edges of this face shape, giving the illusion of a diagonal from the eye across the cheekbone.
  • Thick rounded bangs below the brow line can also help compliment a shoulder length beach wave cut if you are feeling a little sassy.
  • Get some highlights! Instead of having one all over color, break it up by getting highlights that will compliment your style.
  • Avoid shorter cuts that will only bring out all the angular features.
  • When in doubt a collarbone length cut with long layers is your answer. This length looks great on everyone, especially someone with square features.
Pull out your curling irons, or hot rollers. Waves or curls are one of the best choices someone with square features can make. It is always a good idea to ask your stylist when in doubt. We always offer our client’s great suggestions for how to style hair at home. We want you to be successful when attempting to style your hair.
